[PPA] Report from Executive Director John Pappas
This has been an exciting week for poker and I have several items of good news to report.

First, I am pleased to announce that Rep. John Conyers (MI) Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee has agreed to co-sponsor H.R. 2046, the Skill Game Protection Act.  Further, his Committee officially announced today that they are holding a hearing next week (Nov. 14th) to discuss Internet gaming issues.  Both of these considerable achievements can be in a large part credited to our grassroots fly-in from just two weeks ago.  During the fly-in we had more than one occasion to meet with the Chairman and explain our issues.  He was so impressed with our arguments that he asked Annie Duke to testify at the Committee hearing.  While the other witnesses have not been made public at this time, I can tell you that there will be experts to discuss the WTO, age-verification, the proposed regulations and problem gambling.  Click here for more info on the hearing, we encourage our members who live in the Washington, D.C. area to attend.

Next, I would like to discuss some of our grassroots success.  Last Friday the PPA sent a note to our members in the state encouraging them to write the Governor to oppose the state gambling bill language which would criminalize residents for playing Internet poker.  With the hard work and leadership of Randy C (our PPA MA state rep) more than 1700 letters have been sent to State Reps, State Senators and the Governor in less than a week.  This voice has been heard and recognized by these legislators, and they understand that this voice will not go away until the onerous provision is removed.  Randy C will continue to update you on the progress of this campaign.

The PPA can also claim success in the defeat of Kentucky Governor Ernie Fletcher, whose staunch anti-gambling position, as well as a host of other issues lead to his crushing double-digit defeat.  The PPA’s efforts were highlighted in a Louisville Courier Journal column on the day before the election (click here) and the Governors staff acknowledged that they has received several calls, letters and emails from PPA members expressing their displeasure.  Special thanks to TheEngineer for being instrumental in the organization of our effort.

On the regulation front, the Center for Regulatory Effectiveness (CRE), an independent organization that regularly offers Congress objective analysis of proposed governmental agency regulations, released a report this week that noted significant problems with the UIGEA regulations recently submitted by the Treasury Department.  They are extremely influential in Washington regulatory circles and the PPA is pleased with their enlightened view of the onerous regulation. Click here to go to their filing.

On the media front, the WTO issue is beginning to crystallize on Capitol Hill.  This week two articles of note appeared, one in The Bureau of National Affairs and the other in Roll Call.  Both articles specifically call for the Barney Frank Bill as a fix to one of the most daunting cases the WTO has ever faced … a case which could have far reaching and unintended consequences for the U.S.  These articles were especially important as lead EU trade officials were here in DC this week to discuss this very issue! We are doing our very best to make sure members of Congress are aware of what is going on, and just how important this case could become.

On Tuesday night this week, Horton's Kid's a local DC charity that helps inner city kids, threw a Charity poker tournament at the National Building Museum, and it was a rousing success.  With the PPA as its largest supporting donor for the event, Horton's Holiday Hold ‘Em event raised $300,000 all of which goes directly to the charity.  More than 220 Congressional staff, members of Congress, lobbyists and poker enthusiasts had a great time playing poker with PPA Board Member Greg Raymer and Chairman Alfonse D’Amato.  It was a great event which once again highlighted the unique power of poker.  As an added bonus, a PPA member from DC won the event and received a $10,000 2008 WSOP Main Event seat for his efforts.

This has been another exciting week for poker, with many more to come.

If you read my older post http://www.72os.com/poker/component/option,com_myblog/show,online-poker-vs-real-live-poker..html/task,userblog/Itemid,258/
Here is paragraph from it.
" As I was playing poker online the other day I was wondering how Anyone could be good at the game, because its mostly luck involved. But each year we see the same guys on the final tables of World Poker Tournaments. I have decided to watch some clips on youtube and Tv to figure out how they play. I belive most of them are conservitive and let the other players do the betting and raising : have them belive they have the winning hand, and call raise at the river. I will write more about that later. "
As you can see. I planned to play the game slow and steady like most of the pros.
I didnt have any money in my account ( dont get paid till tomorrow ). So I entered a free play money game for 300 chips against 27 other players. ( I wanted to test the theory ( Slow And Steady Wins The Race ), so I didnt want to play for more chips and in a bigger tournament ).
So I played slow. I wouldn't raise any at the start even with a Ace/King. Only few times I raised before the flop and that was if I had pockets or even suited Ace/King/Queens. I didnt raise much either, since I didnt want a good hand to goto waste. I raised around 3X the Big Blind. That tells the other players you have a good hand but they dont know what it is ( Pockets/Suited/High Cards ). Some players will call it with high cards hoping to hit them but most of the other players will fold, and if you see that your card is looking good you should raise. (Lets say you had pocket 10s) You should raise if your pocket is higher than any of the flop (Lets say the flop was 5, 2 ,8) and if there is no chance of flush / straight for the other players, you should raise big ( around 4 to 5 times the Big Blind ). This tells the other play you have a good hand and would make them fold. Unless the other player has the highest card on the flop, which is good for you since you have a higher pocket. You should play it slow if the next card (turn) is higher than the pockets you have ( bet 1/2 of what you bet before or 2 X Big Blind). If the other player goes All in, its safe to fold since they might have hit the turn or even hit 2 pairs ( Unless the other player only had few chips to go all in, in that case you should call. The chances are the other player is hoping or is just going all in with desperation, either way you wouldn't lose as much and you have a better chance of winning the pot than he/she does).
With a winning hand ( Straight / Flush / Full House ) Most of the time I would not go all in. I would just raise min 5 X Big Blind. Unless the other player is low stack and has few chips left to go All in, in that case I would bet around 60 % of the other players chips. The other player trying to bluff or with a Pair will go All in, hoping you would fold.
This is a good idea to use even if you don't have a straight/flush but have a possible winning pair, against a low stacked opponent ). And even if the other player folds, he/she would be left with so little chips, that they wont be able to come back and beat you, unless you make mistakes or they get really lucky. If you get your opponent to low stack, and keep playing it slow and steady, you should be able to beat them.
In the tournament I played today I beat 20 players and was in the lead with 14, 000+ chips and the second place had 7, 000+ chips and so on. There were 6 more player I had to get past in order to win the first place. I got my lucky break when the fourth chip leader went all in (7, 000) with a straight ( 3[d], 4[c] , 6[c] , 7[h] ) There was one more card to be drawn, and I had Straight Also, but with a flush possibility 5 [c] , Ace [c] ). Even if I didn't get the straight it would be a split pot ( unless the other player had 5 / 8 ).
I called the 7, 000 and hit the flush and my chip lead became 3 times bigger than the second in lead. With this I started playing a little aggressively. I raised before the flop when I had good hands ( even high cards Ace/King ), but I would fold if I don't hit anything on the flop, Bluffing was not an option ( I was determined to get the first prize).
Finally it was just me and one other player head to head. I had Around 20, 000 + Chips and the other player had 14, 000 +. The other player started to bluff and go All in most of the time, And this cost me to fold good hands. I got annoyed by the other players "All in All the time" tactics, but I didn't fall into his trap, he was trying to get lucky : " Do or Die ". I had few Aces but with low kickers [ 2, 3 ,5 ]. My oponent had gone All in almost 6 times here and there. I noticed that he went all in with Any pockets, so I finally decided to call a All in with suite [ Ace [d], 9 [d] ). I figured if the player has pocket Aces, I can hope for a flush. And if he has Anything below Ace, I can hit the Ace n win. If he had anything below 9 I have a chance of hitting either Ace or 9 and win. and sure enough I hit both 9 and Ace. The other player only had pocket 5's. He thought I was gonna fold like all the other times, but he just called All in a little too much.
Next thing Iam going to do is use this tactics on a money tournament, once again I will start off small, playing a $5 + 0.50. tourney against 9 other players. I hope to win that and go on from there. ( I Already won few of the $5 tourneys against 9 other players, but this time I Am gonna use this tactic and see if it helps me come out on top each time.).. ..
I will write more About the next tournament I win and add more tricks, and helpful tips ... ..
* ( Please let me know if this helped you or if you have any other ideas / tricks I can use to win more tournaments. )
( don't worry about the grammar and spelling! :) ) ... ..
