fictional:
If scientific reasoning were limited to the logical processes of arithmetic, we should not get very far in our understanding of the physical world. One might as well attempt to grasp the game of poker entirely by the use of the mathematics of probability.
Regarding a hand he folded
pre-flop based on his read of an opponent Daniel said . "If you never try to play above the rim and just make automatic decisions based solely on the numbers, you simply never will become an elite poker player.
It's not the cards that you have all the time that makes you a winner or a loser.
You can't hold enough hands coming into these tournaments without making some courageous plays. (these "courageous plays are what know-nothing namecallers call "donkey plays"
Try to decide how good your hand is at a given moment. Nothing else matters. Nothing!
"When we play, we must realize, before anything else, that we are out to make money."Put yourself in their shoes before you decide on the best way to take their shirts.
The commonest mistake in history is underestimating your opponent; happens at the poker table all the time.
The odds are merely a framework for play, like the lines of a tennis court.
"Poker may be a branch of psychological warfare, an art form or indeed a way of life - but it is also merely a game, in which money is simply the means of keeping score."
"Poker reveals to the frank observer something else of import-it will teach him about his own nature. Many bad players do not improve because they cannot bear self-knowledge."
"You cannot survive without that intangible quality we call heart. The mark of a top player is not how much he wins when he is winning but how he handles his losses. If you win for thirty days in a row, that makes no difference if on the thirty-first you have a bad night, go crazy, and throw it all away."
"Limit poker is a science, but no-limit is an art. In limit, you are shooting at a target. In no-limit, the target comes alive and shoots back at you."
The strong point in poker is never to lose your temper, either with those you are playing with or, more particularly, with the cards. There is no sympathy in poker. Always keep cool. If you lose your head you will lose all your chips.
"The real things to know is that folks will stand to lose more than they will to win. That's the most important percentage there is. I mean, if they lose, they're willin' to lose everything. If they win, they're usually satisfied to win enough to pay for dinner and a show. The best gamblers know that."
The cardinal sin in poker, worse than playing did cards, worse even than figuring your odds correctly, is becoming emotionally involved.
"It never hurts for potential opponents to think you're more than a little stupid and can hardly count all the money in your hip pocket, much less hold on to it.."
Besides lovemaking and singing in the shower, there aren't many human activities where there is a greater difference between a person's self-delusional ability and actual ability than in poker.
Once you start thinking you have nothing left to learn, you have everything to learn.
The odds are merely a framework for play, like the lines of a tennis court.T
In the long run there's no luck in poker, but the short run is longer than most people know.
If you reraise a raiser, and he doesn't raise you back, you know he has kicker problems.
Serious poker is no more about gambling than rock climbing is about taking risks.
Hold'em is a game of calculated aggression: If you cards are good enough for your to call a bet, they are good enough to raise with.
A faint heart never filled a spade flush.
Money isn't everything ... unless you're playing in a rebuy tournament.
When a man with money meets a man with experience, the man with experience leaves with money and the man with money leaves with experience.
I believe in poker the way I believe in the American Dream. Poker is good for you. It enriches the soul, sharpens the intellect, heals the spirit, and - when played well, nourishes the wallet.
If you're a competitive person and you commit yourself to something, you have no choice but to endure
Last evening yet another loser started calling the guy who busted him (not me this time) a "donkey". His statement "how could you call me with ![]()
" was a statement that frequently betrays the utter stupidy, the opressive need to sound "expert" to hide your loss and utter lack of knowledge of the game most namecallers have. (The whiner put in a minimum raise UTG, the 55 guy called - the flop ![]()

JJ guy goes all in 55 guy calls - the turn

note the JJ guy could have easliy gotten busted with a Q)
I must say first I AM NO EXPERT but I am a student of the game and have come to know a few simple, obvious things :
Now I am one to not believe that the printed words of a writer of poker books should be slavishly followed. I also think it's childish to ape the words you hear pro's say on TV (TVpokerese). I swear people seem to think it's cool to say something is "sick" and I've hear it used in so many situations I'm confused by what it is supposed to mean - but thats just me. I am one to test what I read and find out for myself the value or lack of value in what I read. I find it suspicious that a current winning, poker pro would write EVERYTHING HE KNOWS FOR GENERAL CONSUMPTION - I wouldn't. PLUS even if they did, your proper application of those writings is what matters. For example: Every artist is familiar with the same brush, paint and easel as Rembrandt, every basketball player is familiar with the same, court, ball, dribble and shot of Michael Jordan BUT almost no one else can use the same tools as they could no matter how much you read their "how I do it books". But having said that, this is one of the writing's most poker books agree on, I have found accurate so I'll relate them here. In "Super System 2" Doyle Brunson, in defense of being criticized for losing 580,000 with ![]()
in the final event at Bellagio in 2003 and winning the championship with "trash pocket hands" in 1976 with ![]()
: and 1977 with ![]()
said this:
"Today's tournaments are structured to be a lot faster.... You've got to play almost every hand when you're anteing high" At the very least you 've got to see the flop. It's not at all suprising I won the 1976 and the 1977 World Championship with trash hands"
"...... I'd rarely play those hands. There's little reason when the ante doesn't force you to play. A major exception is when I play a pot for the sole reason of trying to steal it Then it doesn't matter what I have. I mean I could be playing the hand without even looking at my holecards. At such time, I'd be playing my money, my position and a particular player. My hand wouldn't matter. If I was forced to look at it because I got played with, I might find two Aces, A-K or trash.... I hadn't made a pair all day, and I'd had to stay alive by stealing some pots, but on this particular play (referring to 2003), my read was wrong.
This is a capacity good pros have most amateurs don't - TO PLAY WITH NOTHING FOR REASONS OTHER THAN YOUR HAND. In non-professional games, you are also more likely to find players in a pot who chase and hit where a pro would have folded streets earlier.
One key indicator whining players of this particular low level betray is that most times their "whining about getting caught" mentions only his hand versus the busting hand. There is often little mention about preceding play and players tendicies, how many are seated at the the table, level in the tournament, stack & table position, ante/blinds or any of those "unimportant, inconvenient contributing facts/factors" that contributed to the demise.
So the next time you call someone a "donkey" think first - are you showing how little YOU really know about the game? At least consider that if you find yourself in this position a LOT (whining in the losers lounge) maybe you need to learn something...
OK I gotta admit I get more than a little perturbed by people copying "TV Code words" - it's weak make up your own stuff or at least use the words per their definition - so sue me... LOL

Donkey:[donk]: noun, to donk v. slang. poor poker player, a player who thinks they are good but no evidence of this assertion can be found. 2. Often found shortstacked, whining or whining in the losers lounge while good players are still in the game - usually blurting unprompted questions or statements like: "play me for cash","play me for real", "freerolls suck/ are waste of time" ,"play me hu" , "I won this or that tournament last week","my bankroll is bigger than yours!" , etc., etc. etc.3. Usually in this situation being unable to beat players deemed, by player most often using this term, of lower skill. 4. Not to be confused with making a wrong read, bluffing, late positioned / big/short stack, big blinds, calling a 7 2 bluff or any other read that may give basis to call with something other than AA - they never like all other human poker players make mistakes. B. Frequently heard to exclaim "you called me with that"! note: this can usually be rebuffed with the reply "You went all in with that!" (see below: the video where Patrik Antonius' 5. Sometimes a mindless warning to someone who may be playing badly to stop and play better so they can win - instead of the person who cannot restrain themselves exploiting these weaknesses to win - this person would much rather play at a table with Stu Ungar, Alan Cunningham, Phil Ivey, Chip Jett, Barry Greenstein and Johnny Chan or where all players play perfectly and are therefore better than they, thereby insuring they lose (can't beat bad players / can't beat good players). (note: they frequently are "better" than these people too - no really just ask then check their ranking scores - zero does not mean they are bad) 6. Often issued as an alert to the other players of "Hey a player with "lesser skills" is taking all my chips" and a reminder of "I can beat Raymer on any given day and I am making "expert" commentary on how others should play, ignore the fact I am not winning here and now because I am unable to take advantage of my own excellent advice". Appendix inspired by jsc88310 : Frequently the player who "checks you" to the nuts (e.g doesn't know the correct bet to give you incorrect odds to call and/or doesn't have the guts to make the bet and/or thinks it's a limit game), goes all in on the river (with 2nd or 3rd best hand) then screams "donk" ,"chaser" ,"riverrat" on the way to or from the losers lounge for twenty minutes! 7. trite, overused, "TVPokerese" for someone who is "English challenged" trying very hard to sound like they "know poker" having not mastered the actual game. Verbal device used to distract from the fact their own play is poor. (did Webster play a lot of online poker or what!) (c)2007 JonHolt / Merlin333 | Noah Emmanuel |

The House JudiciaryCommittee didn't signal whether it was interested in repealing Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), but it did voice its frustration with inconsistent nature of gambling laws and prosecution at a House hearing Wednesday.
The Democratic chairman of the committee, John Conyers, openly questioned the "selective enforcement" of anti-gambling laws. Rep. Shelley Berkley (D-Nev.) to her criticism a step further.
"The laws regarding Internet gaming are absurd and inconsistent," Berkley said. "And the UIGEA has made things worse, targeting the financial sector and creating a hypocritical carve out for horse betting."
Berkley also blasted the government's decision to remove online gambling from its WTO commitments.
"It's the trade equivalent of taking our ball and going home," Berkley said before noting the U.S. is now on the hook for a substantial amount of money as a result of that decision.
Berkley would like to see Internet gambling regulated in the U.S., and has proposed conducting a study that would provide Congress data to help make that decision.
Opponents of online gambling, meanwhile, tried to keep the focus of the hearing on problem gambling, protecting youths and state's rights.
Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Tex.) called Internet gambling "fronts for money laundering and terrorists." He also said that gambling online leads to addictive gambling and claimed that children can play online without having their ages verified.
But the most interesting testimony came from U.S. Attorney Catherine Hanaway. Hanaway, representing the Department of Justice, noted that it was legal for American players to place bets online, but that it was illegal of casino operators to accept those bets.
Hanaway also said repeatedly that "all online gambling is illegal." But she did note that the DOJ had not seen a case in which online gambling was used to launder anything other than gambling winnings.
The two funniest moments in the hearing came during question and answer sessions. Deep into the session, Family Research Council Vice President Tom McClusky admitted that his organization wasn't just opposed to online gambling, but all forms of gambling, At that point, Rep. Stephen Cohen (D-Tenn.) was asked McClusky if he "was opposed to all forms of fun."
Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) provided the other humorous moment when he said that there was no wagering in fantasy sports and that's why America's youths are allowed to participate in it. No one in the chamber chose to laugh, but the absolute silence that followed that statement spoke volumes.

H.4307 (i) Placing, sending, transmitting, relaying wagers to another person prohibited under certain circumstances; penalties.
Recently, Governor Deval Patrick proposed a bill (H.4307, click here to read) that seeks to expand casino gambling in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. This bill also includes a proposition that would make it a crime for you to play poker on the Internet (See: Section 15(h)(2)(i)). Under this provision, violators will be subject to a maximum term of 2 years in the house of correction, a fine of $25,000, or both. Ironically, H.4307 is pro-casino gambling legislation, yet it makes Internet gaming a crime. This is an unacceptable double-standard!
The Poker Players Alliance is committed to assisting Massachusetts poker players by bringing attention to this attack on our rights; however, we cannot do this alone. We need your help and are asking that you send letters to Governor Deval Patrick, your local State Representative and your State Senator. Poker Players Alliance: News and Articles| [PPA] Report from Executive Director John Pappas |
Online Poker Community Urged to Send Question About UIGEA to YouTube DebatePoker community, supporters of Ron Paul, prompted to submit YouTube video for debated regarding UIGEA passage and freedom of Internet
The CNN/YouTube Republican debate is taking place on November 28. The format, which included a video of a talking snowman that left Republican Mitt Romney not amused, was an instant hit with the rest of the nation. This CNN/YouTube debate is expected to be an even bigger hit.
Back in October 0f 2006, a Republican led initiative passed through the infamous Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) attached to none other than an unrelated (and highly important) Port Security Bill. Due to the urgency in passing the Port Security Bill, the UIGEA - by default - would eventually come into law. It should be noted that many Democrats also voted in favor of the Port Security bill while expressing reservations about the unrelated attachment.
The poker community eventually forced one of the UIGEA's co-founders out of office, Republican Jim Leach of Iowa. He was a front runner in that race until fans of online poker banded together in a campaign to educate Iowa voters about their elected official's activities, designed heavily to appeal to special interests.
The UIGEA essentially makes online poker illegal by placing the burden on banking institutions to monitor and prohibit such transactions.
Scott Shuller, a poker fan out of Ohio who is one of many business executives floored by the passage of this new law, has asked that all fans of poker submit a short video to CNN related to the UIGEA and what gives politicians the right to police our activities over the Internet (especially as it pertains to America's favorite past time).
"Wouldn't it be great if they aired a question about the UIGEA or Online Poker during the debate?" commented Shuller. "Really put them (the political candidates) on the spot."
Of the 2008 US Presidential Republican candidates appearing, only Ron Paul voted against the Port Security Bill, mainly because it attached the unrelated piece of legislation that he opposes.
“I believe strongly that the internet should not be regulated by the federal government and believes even more strongly that people should be free to engage in the activities they wish, as long as they are willing to take responsibility for their actions," Ron Paul told Gambling911.com's own Kira Wissman this past summer.
“The majority of people in Washington were afraid to support the internet for fear it would label them ‘pro-porn’ or ‘pro-gambling’.”
Because the YouTube debate generates interests mostly from an Internet-savvy audience, the question would most certainly be relevant.
Several hundred, or even a few thousand, people submitting such a question would prompt CNN to include the subject within its platform.
Likewise, Ron Paul supporters are being urged to submit a similar question as it would help solidify their candidate's "Internet freedom" message.
"Just want to help this industry and keep it chugging away," Shuller said. "The message should be spread by every fan of poker and online gambling in general."
You may not want to use a talking snowman for your video.
